Position Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Design Technologist to support the design and documentation of audiovisual (AV) systems across Sapphire’s projects. This entry-level role is ideal for someone with strong technical aptitude and proficiency in AutoCAD, Visio, and D-Tools who is eager to learn and grow in the AV industry.
Reporting to the Lead Design Technologist, the Design Technologist works closely with Project Leads, Sales Representatives, Programmers, and Site Leads to prepare detailed system drawings, cable schedules, rack elevations, and other technical documentation. This role ensures that Sapphire’s design standards are applied consistently from concept to installation, contributing to high-quality project delivery and exceptional client outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Design Documentation and Drafting
● Prepare detailed drawings, including system layouts, schematics, floor plans, and elevations under the guidance of the Lead Design Technologist.
● Update drawings and documentation throughout the project lifecycle to reflect design changes and field markups.
● Maintain organized project files and ensure drawing sets adhere to Sapphire’s standards and naming conventions.
● Support documentation for submittals, installation packages, and as-built drawings.
Collaboration and Coordination
● Work with project team members to ensure design accuracy and alignment with field requirements.
● Incorporate feedback from installation and programming teams to maintain consistency between drawings and on-site conditions.
● Assist with coordination between design, programming, and service teams to ensure smooth project handoffs
Quality and Process Compliance
● Ensure all drawings meet Sapphire’s drafting and documentation standards.
● Conduct basic quality checks on documentation packages before release.
● Support the implementation and refinement of templates and drawing standards within AutoCAD.
● Maintain version control and disciplined file management within shared systems.
Technical Support and Learning
● Gain familiarity with AV components, signal flow, and system architecture.
● Support the preparation of system documentation such as cable schedules, device lists, and rack layouts.
● Learn from senior team members to build understanding of integration best practices.
● Participate in training and mentorship programs to advance technical and design skills.
Safety and Compliance
● Ensure all documentation aligns with applicable building, electrical, and safety standards.
● Support the Field team with accurate and up-to-date drawings for safe installations.
Qualifications and Skills
● 1–3 years of experience in drafting, CAD design, or related technical documentation roles (AV or low-voltage experience preferred).
● Proficiency in AutoCAD; experience with D-Tools, Visio, or PDF markup tools (e.g., Drawboard) is an asset.
● Strong attention to detail, technical drawing accuracy, and ability to manage multiple drawing sets simultaneously.
● Excellent organization and communication skills.
● Basic understanding of AV, IT, or construction terminology preferred.
● Willingness to learn AV design principles, system layouts, and integration workflows.
● Proactive attitude with a commitment to quality, consistency, and continuous improvement.
Other Requirements
● Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
● Willingness to travel to project sites as needed.
● Smartphone with data plan for occasional business use.
● CSA-approved 6–8” Green Triangle safety boots.
